“If it were up to me, there wouldn’t be any children in Terra Nova. When the Greeks took over Naples in the eighth century, they didn’t allow families for the first hundred years. They imported only the brightest and strongest from Athens to pave the way, and that, Doctor Shannon, was known as one of the most successful colonizations of all time.”
— Dr. Katseles in a deleted scene from “Genesis: Part 1

Dr. Katseles is a deleted character from Terra Nova. Katseles was meant to be a doctor who worked in the colony’s infirmary. He was also meant to have a hostile attitude toward his patients and toward Dr. Elisabeth Shannon, disapproving of her because she had broken the population law and brought her children to the colony.

One scene with Dr. Katseles was filmed, but it was cut from the final version of the series. The scene was included as bonus material on the DVDs, along with a number of other deleted scenes.

Creation and Development[]

In the original script for the pilot episode of Terra Nova from 2009, there was no mention of Dr. Katseles. There were multiple people in the colony who were hostile toward the Shannons because they had broken the population law, but none of them was said to be a doctor. It is unknown whether this means that no doctor in the colony had a problem with the Shannons, or whether the character did not appear merely because the infirmary was not shown yet.

In 2010, the pilot was rewritten and filmed. This version showed Elisabeth Shannon working in the infirmary from the very first episode. The first scene where the infirmary appeared showed Elisabeth reporting to Dr. Katseles. At the time, he was tending to a patient, but his attitude toward the patient seemed to be rather neglectful and dismissive. When Elisabeth introduced herself to him, he promptly offended her by saying that he disapproved of her decision to have three children and bring them to Terra Nova. Elisabeth told him that she was capable of raising three children and building a successful career at the same time. She also pointed out that he was treating his patient with a medicine she was likely allergic to, thereby making her condition even worse. Afterwards, Carter was brought to the infirmary because he had pulled out the stitches in his gunshot wound and was bleeding. Katseles was asked to tend to Carter, but he said he could not do so at the moment. Elisabeth then went to suture Carter’s wound herself.

The first episode of Terra Nova was rewritten once more in 2011. Though a significant portion of the episode remained the same, some scenes were added and some were deleted. The one scene in which Dr. Katseles had appeared was cut, thereby removing the character from the show. The scene was, however, included on the DVDs as bonus material; it can be found in the Deleted Scenes feature on the first disc. The feature includes a total of seven scenes from the first and second episode; the scene with Dr. Katseles is the second one of them.
